Ortho graphics of the machine room. 2010
[Fall 2010]
Professor: Jodi La Coe / Arch 131 Basic Design Studio
Project Duration: 4 Weeks
The initial phase of "Cinematic Kinematic" involved analyzing a film. From the film, students were asked to express a verb through a conceptual model that conveyed the essence of the film. Thereafter, students designed a wooden machine, which physically preformed the verb. In the last step of the project, the task was to design a room that enclosed our machine. The verb i chose to express was "to transform" through the means of playing and manipulating shadows. As the windmill turned, it would bring up patterns from the body upward and a incoming light source would project the images onto a surface.
The movement of the sun and the shadows influenced the design of the room. The ritual that occurs in this space are as follows: the user wakes up every day, at a certain point, when the sun cast the different images from the top of the machine, he observes shadow casted on the ground. He believes that the shadows hold a greater meaning and throughout the day he attempts to figure out what they all mean.
